BERKELEY - The seventh-ranked California men's swimming team won eight of 14 events in a 143-119 dual-meet victory over Washington on a rainy Thursday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears, swimming at home for the first time this season, improved their record to 2-0 (1-0 Pac-10). The Huskies lost their first meet of the season and fell to 5-1 (0-1 Pac-10). There were no diving events today. "I thought we raced better," Cal head coach David Durden said. "We really tried to focus in on a couple of events, three events at max, for a lot of our guys. We really wanted to see how they would perform with a smaller event load, and they did okay. We were better than we were two weeks ago and better than we were three weeks ago. They should be fresh and ready to train tomorrow morning, which is good and what we want of these guys right now." Cal sophomore Nathan Adrian and senior Bennett Clark each won an individual race and took part in the Bears' winning 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley relay. The Cal quartet of junior Josh Daniels, sophomore Graeme Moore, Clark and Adrian met an NCAA B standard with their time of 1:20.10 to win the 200-free relay. Bears sophomore Guy Barnea led off the winning 400-medley relay, which posted a time of 3:17.35. Sophomore teammate Damir Dugonjic, Adrian and Clark rounded out the relay. Clark also won the 100 freestyle in a time of 45.18 and Adrian won the 200 free in 1:38.42.
Four of Cal's 2008 Olympians won events today, including U.S. gold medalist Adrian, Israel's Barnea, Slovenian Dugonjic (55.01 in the 100-yard breaststroke) and Estonian freshman Martin Liivamagi (1:50.46 in the 200-yard individual medley). Barnea also collected two second-place finishes, in the 100 backstroke (50.76) and in the 100 butterfly (50.55). Moore won the 50 free in a time of 20.34, edging Daniels, who took second in 20.89. Bears junior Sean Mahoney claimed the 200 breaststroke in 2:02.56 after swimming 57.07 to take second behind Dugonjic in the 100 breaststroke. "Graeme's 50 was good, better than it was last year in terms of the details we're trying to get him to do in that," Durden said. "That was encouraging to see. I thought Sean Mahoney's 200 breaststroke was better than his 100." Cal returns to action in the Stanford Triple Distance meet at 2 p.m. on Nov. 12 in Stanford, Calif. Cal Results
