BERKELEY - The University of California's men's swimming team (1-0) opened up the 2002-03 season with a 163-91 win over Pacific in a dual meet at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears captured every event, with freshmen Mike Cavic, Ryan Lean and Jens Thiele victorious in two events apiece.
Cavic won the 50-yard freestyle (20.53) and 100-yard butterfly (49.68), while Lean notched wins in the 1000 free (9:20.16) and 500 free (4:32.91). Thiele won the 100-yard backstroke (48.75) and 100 free (45.48).
Other winners for the Bears included seniors Joe Bruckart in the 200 free (1:40.37) and Quentin Byma in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.05), juniors Jeff Natalizio in the 200 back (1:50.90) and Keith Vogelgesang in the 200 fly (1:52.17) and sophomores Caleb Rowe in the 200 breast (2:03.41) and John Dorr in the 400-yard individual medley (3:59.85). The team also won both the 200-yard medley relay (1:34.13) and 200-yard freestyle relay (1:22.83).
The Bears will meet Pacific again Oct. 25-26 as the team travels to compete in the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif.
