Sophomore Marcin Tarczynski and freshman Adam Hinshaw each won two events, and five other Golden Bears were victorious, as the No. 6-ranked Cal men's swimming and diving team upended No. 5 USC, 165-125, Friday (Feb. 3) at McDonald's Swim Stadium in Los Angeles.

Cal has now improved its record to 4-1 and defeated a Trojan squad that had some of the fastest times in the nation coming into the Pac-12 dual meet. Tarczynski, a native of Warsaw, Poland, captured both the 100 (48.18) and 200 back (1:46.31), while Hinshaw, from Saratoga, won the 500 (4:27.79) and 1000 free (9:10.19).

Other individual champions for the Bears were junior standout Tom Shields in the 200 free (1:35.67), senior Martin Liivamagi in the 100 breast (54.72), freshman Will Hamilton in the 200 fly (1:46.67) and junior Trevor Hoyt in the 200 breast (1:59.89). Cal also captured the three-meter diving title with sophomore Tyler Pullen scoring 324.75, and won the opening 200 medley relay (1:28.32, senior Mathias Gydesen, senior Nolan Koon, Shields, sophomore Shayne Fleming).

The Bears finished 1-2-3 in both the 100 and 200 breast. Koon (55.27) and Hoyt (55.71) were second and third, respectively in the 100 breast. Koon (2:02.85) and freshman Christian Higgins (2:04.39) were second and third in the 200 breast.

Sophomore Jeremy Bagshaw was second behind Hinshaw in both 500 (4:28.07) and 1000 free (9:11.24), and the Bears' 200 medley relay team of Tarczynski, Liivamagi, junior Austin Brown and Tyler Messerschmidt was second behind their Cal teammates with a mark of 1:29.32.

Cal swam the last three swimming events as exhibitions. The Bears will next return to McDonald's Swim Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 4 to swim exhibition races as USC hosts Stanford in a Pac-12 dual meet.
