BERKELEY - Stefan Frei recorded two shutouts last weekend against Washington and Oregon State, with the latter giving No. 17 California the 2007 Pac-10 championship on Sunday, to make the sophomore goalkeeper the Muscle Milk California Student-Athlete of the Week.
The De La Salle High School graduate from Alamo, CA, made a total of 10 saves over the weekend, including seven against the Beavers. The shutouts were the eighth and ninth of the season for Frei, who leads the conference in that category. He also leads the Pac-10 in saves per game (4.53) and save percentage (.875).
The Pac-10 title gives the Bears an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which begins Nov. 23 or 24, depending on their seeding. The tournament field will be announced Nov. 19 at 2:30 p.m. PST on ESPN News.
