BERKELEY - CalBears.com caught up with junior defender/midfielder Kyle Marsh on the Golden Bears' bye week and asked him about his last year at Cal, what he wants to do next, the Pac-12 Networks and video games.
CalBears.com: Is it strange not to have any games this week?
Kyle Marsh: No, it's kind of nice.
CalBears.com: How are you spending your extra time?
KM: Right now just working on school work, catching up with reading and running around.
CalBears.com: How is the season going for you personally?
KM: It's going pretty good. Couple of ups and downs like every season has. Just trying to finish on the next three games and trying to win out.
CalBears.com: You've played on the backline and in midfield this season. Which do you prefer?
KM: I like defense a lot. I used to play midfield when I was younger, and it's kind of nice to get back to that. Both are good for me.
CalBears.com: Did you play mainly in midfield before this year?
KM: I played left mid and right mid before. I've played left back a little bit. Pretty much I'll play anywhere wide.
CalBears.com: The regular season is winding down, with just three games to go. What is the team focusing on now?
KM: We're definitely focused on the next game even moreso than any other time.
CalBears.com: What do you think about having some of Cal's games on the Pac-12 Networks?
KM: It's really cool. It's definitely different, with some different starting times. It makes it a lot easier for people to watch and not have to come out to games. My dad will stay home sometimes and watch games.
CalBears.com: You're a junior athletically and a senior academically - is this your last year playing for Cal?
KM: This is my last season. I'm going to graduate at the end of spring.
CalBears.com: Do you think about your college career is coming to an end?
KM: Yeah, definitely. I'm trying to make the most out of it. Even if things don't work out perfectly, I've had an amazing time the last four seasons. It's a pretty good experience. I'm trying to make the most of it. You can't get hung up on it too much. Just enjoy it really.
CalBears.com: You're a conservation and resource studies major. What kind of career do you want to pursue?
KM: I was thinking about grad school, but I definitely want to take a year or two off at least, to do some sort of research somewhere. I'm not exactly sure what or where. But I'll be down to work for the government, maybe some government agency, get a grant to work somewhere, and do some research or help some other researcher.
CalBears.com: What kind of research?
KM: My area of interest is mostly conservation biology and wildlife ecology and a little bit of environmental health science. Definitely more of conservation biology. That's what I want to go into.
CALBEARS.COM: The World Series is taking place now, and you have some baseball heritage as one of your grandfathers played for the New York Yankees. What's your favorite baseball team?
KM: The definitely like the Giants a lot. My dad is a huge fan of the Giants, so he's super stoked that they're doing so well. I've been watching the games, too, and it's been fun watching them play.
CalBears.com: How good are you at "FIFA"?
KM: I'm very bad at "FIFA." I'm one of the players who doesn't really play at all. But we play a lot "Super Smash Brothers." That's another really big game on our team, and I do pretty well at that.
CALBEARS.COM: What's your favorite movie?
KM: Anything with Will Farrell in it is good to go.
CalBears.com: What's your favorite TV show?
KM: I've been watching "Game of Thrones" - it's a really good show. But it's taking so long for the next season to come out, I might move on.
CalBears.com: What's the most-played song on your iPod?
KM: I don't use my iPod so much. I usually put on Pandora and listen to the Black Keys and Michael Franti stations.
