BERKELEY - California sophomore forward John Fitzpatrick claimed spots on the College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer Teams of the Week after scoring two goals, including the gamewinner, in the No. 16/21 Golden Bears' 3-0 win over rival Stanford on Oct. 2 in Stanford, Calif. The Encinitas, Calif., product scored in the 16th and 89th minutes to propel Cal to the victory in both team's Pac-10 Conference opener. This is Cal's second appearance on a College Soccer News National Team of the Week, as senior defender A.J. Soares earned a spot on the squad after the Bears' season-opening success in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. At the 15:02 mark of the Stanford match, Fitzpatrick headed a cross from senior forward Davis Paul past Stanford goalkeeper Alexander Hutchins for what turned out to be the winning goal. Fitzpatrick made the score 2-0 at 88:13, taking a nice through ball from senior midfielder Hector Jimenez and firing past Hutchins again for his second strike. Cal (5-1-2) looks to extend its five-game unbeaten streak with more Pac-10 road games at Oregon State on Friday, Oct. 8, and at Washington on Sunday, Oct. 10.
