Cal vs. Saint Mary's Ends in 1-1 Tie
BERKELEY, Calif. -- The California Golden Bears men's soccer team battled the Saint Mary's Gaels to the end in a double sudden-death overtime tie, 1-1, Monday at Witter Field.
In the first half, California (1-0-1) got on the board at the 19th-minute mark on a goal by sophomore John Macdonald off a cross by junior John Beck.
The Bears helped Saint Mary's (0-0-2) tie the game in the second half, when a Cal player inadvertently knocked the ball into its own net. Gaels sophomore Jon Gordon received the credit for the goal, as he was the last Gael player to touch the ball. The second half ended in a 1-1 draw, forcing the game into sudden-death overtime.
With two minutes left to play in the first overtime period, Beck received his second yellow card of the match, causing the Bears to play a man short. Defense was crucial for both sides in the battle for victory. Saint Mary's did not score, despite having the power play, which led to the second sudden-death period.
Still playing short, Cal thought it had the game-winner on a shot by freshman Kendall Simmonds with two minutes left in the period. But, the goal was recalled due to an offside violation.
Sophomore Derrick Dyslin was a defensive standout, helping the Bears to hold back the Gaels advantage in the second overtime.
Cal will face San Jose State, Sunday, Sept. 7, on Witter Field at 4 p.m.
