Bears Down Cal State Northridge
BERKELEY, Calif. - The California men's soccer team (11-6-1) defeated Cal State
Northridge, 1-0, Friday on Witter Field in the Bears regular
season final game.
The two squads played to a scoreless tie for the first 45
minutes of play, despite Cal outshooting the Matadors, 9-1
(20-6 for the game). But senior Adam Hunter broke the scoring
draught, producing the game-winning goal with just 11 minutes
left to play in the second half. Hunter, the team's leading
scorer, took a high cross from sophomore Tim Castillo at the
79-minute mark and headed the ball in for the 1-0 victory. With
the goal, Hunter secured third place on Cal's career records
with 26 career goals. He also holds the fifth spot for career
assists with 16.
Backup goalkeeper Matt Katz started his first game of the
season, as sophomore Doug Brooks sat out the game, and recorded
his first shutout. Castillo and sophomore Derrick Dyslin turned
in outstanding defensive play.
The Bears return to action Sunday at 3 p.m. in an exhibition
match against the San Jose Clash.
