Cal Shut Out by Anteaters

FULLERTON, Calif.--Robert Melendez kicked in a loose ball that had bounced off California goalkeeper Doug Brooks for the only goal of the match Friday night as UC Irvine defeated Cal,1-0, in the opening match of the Titan Classic at Cal State Fullerton.

The win improved UCI's record to 4-6-4 while the Golden Bears fell to 8-5-1.

The Anteaters' Walter Camargo passed the ball to Michael Mucino on the right side in the 29th minute and his shot from about 15 yards caromed to the left side where Meldnez was wide open. Aaron Linder had five saves in logging the shutout in the nets for UCI.

On Sunday, Cal plays Cal State Fullerton at 3:30 p.m., and UCI plays Iona at 1 p.m.
