STANFORD, Calif. - Ninth-ranked California ended the regular season with a 2-1 overtime loss to rival Stanford on Friday night at Maloney Field, after the Cardinal's Galen Thompson scored the winning goal in the 97th minute. The Pac-10 champion Golden Bears, whose record is now 12-5-1 (7-3-0 Pac-10), now await the NCAA Championship selection show, to be broadcast on ESPNews between 1-2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 6. Stanford has a 7-7-4 record (5-3-2). Cal had been unbeaten in the last nine games (7-0-2) in the series with Stanford, but the Cardinal snapped that streak with Thompson's goal, set up by a Dan Shapiro cross. Before tonight, Stanford hadn't beaten Cal since the 2001 season, when the Cardinal swept the Bears in two games. Junior forward Javier Ayala-Hil gave Cal a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute, after he scored off an assist from junior defender Luke Sassano. Stanford's Evan Morgan, off a Thiago Sa Freire assist, scored in the 30th minute to tie the game at 1-1. The Bears had a chance to end matters in regulation, but Ayala-Hil's shot in the 90th minute was high. They were credited with one shot in overtime - a 92nd-minute shot by senior defender Steve Purdy that went wide - before Stanford completed its upset. Cal and Stanford split the season series 1-1, which gives the schools a tie in men's soccer as part of the Lexus Gauntlet.
