BERKELEY - Jeff Cosgriff scored a hat trick to lead No. 4/5 California to a 4-1 Pac-10 Conference victory over Oregon State on an overcast Sunday at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears improved their record to 8-3-0 (2-1-0 Pac-10). The Beavers fell to 5-5-2 (1-3-0).
Cosgriff doubled his goal total this season with his three goals today. The 6-4 senior forward from San Bruno, Calif., now ranks second at Cal this season in points (career-high 16), goals (career-high 6) and assists (career-high 4). Cosgriff also recorded Cal's first hat trick of the season and became the third Bear to notch a multiple-goal game. The other two are junior forward Andrew Wiedeman and junior defender A.J. Soares.
Freshman goalkeeper Robby Gogatz made his second start of the season and saved seven shots for the Bears. Goalkeeper Steve Spangler made four saves for Oregon State.
The total shots were almost even, as Cal outshot the Beavers, 15-14. The Bears had a 5-4 edge in the first half and tied Oregon State at 10-10 in the second half. But Cal had a 6-1 corner-kick advantage, with the Beavers' only corner coming in the 84th minute.
After a 0-0 first half, Cal scored its first goal just 29 seconds into the second half. In the 46th minute, junior midfielder Demitrius Omphroy crossed to Cosgriff in the OSU box, the senior forward rounder Spangler and tapped the ball in for his first goal of the day. Cal led, 1-0.
In the 50th minute, Cosgriff pounced on a loose ball in the box to score his second and give the Bears a 2-0 lead.
OSU struck back in the 54th minute. Tanner French launched a long shot into the Cal box that Gogatz bobbled. Travis Sanchez corralled the loose ball and scored to cut the lead to one at 2-1.
In the 80th minute, freshman midfielder Chris Ortega and junior midfielder Hector Jimenez combined to find Cosgriff in the OSU box, and the forward fired past Spangler for a 3-1 Cal lead. The assist marked Ortega's first point as a Bear, while Jimenez picked up his team-leading eighth assist of the season.
Cal tallied its final goal in the 83rd minute, after freshman midfielder Tony Salciccia blasted a shot off an OSU goalpost. Wiedeman collected the ball and scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season from close range.
The Bears next travel to Southern California for two conference games - Friday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. at UCLA and Sunday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. at San Diego State.
