HOUSTON, Texas -Cal advanced to rugby's collegiate Final Four with a 70-0 win over Dartmouth today. Cal scored ten tries, six of them in the forwards, as the team showcased power in the pack and the ability to play expansive, running rugby. Lock Sam Enochian, flanker Kort Schubert and wing Ryan Fried had two tries apiece in the rout.
There's bad news and worse news for would-be opponents. Dartmouth did not play badly, despite the margin, refusing to give up and threatening to score on several occasions. Cal were simply too good with seemingly every player hitting peak form at the crucial point in the season. But head coach Jack Clark struck an even more ominous note for potential challengers: "It was a good performance, and we got our job done," he said. "However, there is work to do before we reach our true potential. We may be a good collegiate team, but there is more. We haven't played our best game." It is hard to imagine players such as flyhalf Dave Stroble, hooker Kirk Khasigian, lock Matt Kane and No. 8 Shaun Paga having more impact on a game than they did at Rice University. They have been among Cal's top performers all season, but others are joining the ranks of impact players; Enochian had a stand-out game, and Fried, returning from injury, found plenty of work.
Stanford also advanced to the Final Four, defeating Air Force 29-22 in a thrilling match, presenting a possible showdown between the Bay Area rivals at the Final Four to be played at San Francisco's Balboa Park, May 2-3.
