SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - With 11 freshmen and four sophomores starting the match, the Golden Bears scored 20 tries Sunday on Lower East Field to beat UC Santa Cruz, 128-0.
Flyhalf Andrew Battaglia recorded five tries, wing Matthew Chipman scored four, scrumhalf Nicklas Boyer and replacement fullback Andre Coquillard each had a pair, and seven other players found the try zone for California while holding the hosts scoreless.
Boyer connected on 10-of-13 conversions, Coquillard made 4-of-6 and Battaglia missed his only attempt.
The young Rugby Bears were eager to make their mark in what will likely be the final match of the season to feature a majority of underclassmen.
"Everyone was eager to show the coaches what they've got," said outside center James Poindexter. "At the same time, we tried to stay calm and collected."
Match-day captain Travis Moscone said that his job was "to keep the boys focused and get the job done," and Cal certainly did that on a bright and breezy day in front of a loyal group of traveling supporters.
"It was great to see all these guys get some minutes and have some moments," added
Moscone. "A few mistakes at the beginning but they did well."
The Bears (15-1) will now prepare for their Sunday, April 15, match against Saint Mary's College at 1 p.m. on Pat Vincent Field in Moraga.
