DAVIS, Calif. - Nine Golden Bears scored 14 tries to beat UC Davis, 86-7, Saturday on Russell Field.
"I've been trying to step up my game,"said Lombardo, who did well not to take the ball into touch during his bursts down the sideline.
"We're trying to play with width, depth and quickness, and if I can keep the ball in play, all 15 of us can stay on attack."
California yielded a penalty try in the 37th minute after giving up a couple of penalties near its goal line. Aggies fullback Richard Galvin converted to account for the host's points.
The pitch was surprisingly firm after almost a week of steady rain, but the Bears, who arrived ready for swampy conditions, did not use better footing as any excuse to let off the gas.
Cal's next challenge lies north of the border in Vancouver, Canada, where Cal will face the University of British Columbia in the "World Cup" finale at noon on Sunday, March 25, in Thunderbird Stadium.
"We played well at times today," said Barrett. "Didn't want to give up that penalty
try, but we didn't give in either. We're trying to build some momentum going into
next weekend against a very tough UBC team."
The Rugby Bears hold a one-point advantage over UBC going into the decisive match of the time-honored, two-match, annual series.
