CHICO, Calif. - California beat the Wildcats Saturday on a sunny, gusty afternoon that ranged from cool to chilly at Chico State, with nine different Golden Bears scoring a total of 15 tries in the 97-12 win. Sophomore fullback Anthony Lombardo scored four times for Cal, with freshmen center Jared Braun, frosh back-rower Tyler Colin and junior scrumhalf Connor Ring notching two tries apiece.
Chico State put together two tries in the second half, converting the latter for the Wildcats' points on the day.
Many perennial starters were rested and others exited in the vicinity of halftime, which had the Bears up, 52-0. James Bailes shifted from his usual fullback spot to flyhalf and was 4-for-6 on conversions before yielding to Todd Grant, who connected on 7-of-9.
In the reserve-grade match that followed the Starting XV, Cal beat Chico State, 72-3.
Cal returns home to host Saint Mary's for homecoming on Saturday, March 20, at 1 p.m in what may be the last match for a couple of seasons at Witter Rugby Field.
At stake is a regional playoff bye into the national collegiate Round of 16 as the No. 2 national seed.
The loser will host the Pacific regional playoffs April 2-3, with eight teams vying for the region's two remaining slots in the national competition.
