Bears Remain Unbeaten

BERKELEY, Calif. - Fly half Dave Stroble led Cal's Varsity Rugby Team to its first international victory of the season Thursday at Witter Field, Berkeley.

Stroble who often plays winger for the Bears (3-0) thrived on a position change and kicking duties, scoring 24 points as Cal defeated Argentinian club side San Carlos 64-5. Winger Todd Conneely added three tries and flanker Mark Hildebrand scored two.

The San Carlos youth selection was undaunted by the Bear's size advantage in the forwards, matching Cal in possession from line outs and scrums. True to Argentinian rugby tradition, they were also willing to pass the ball in unconventional situations and caught the Bears by surprise on occasions.

They were rewarded with the first try of the second half-the first points the Bears have conceded this season.

The Bear's next game is a crucial league match up at UC Davis on Saturday, February 8 at 1.00pm.
