Rugby Opens Season With Win

Cal's Varsity Rugby Team won their season opener Saturday defeating St. Mary's College 46-0 at Witter field in Berkeley.

The Bear's forward pack disrupted St. Mary's defensive scheme with power running and dominated the line-outs. The forward's work gave the backs a steady stream of scoring opportunities and they capitalized by sending the ball wide to the wings.

The 1996 national champion Bears produced 8 tries, 3 by fullback Katsu Takei.

The second team also won 55-10, scoring 9 tries.
