The Streak Is Over

BERKELEY, Calif. - The California Varsity Rugby team lost to Stanford, 24-21, Saturday at Witter Rugby Field, ending a 98-game winning streak against domestic opponents which spanned nearly six years. The teams traded penalty kicks until midway through the second half when, with the Cardinal leading 12-9, Stanford scored two tries to break the game open, taking a 24-9 advantage. The Golden Bears added two late tries, but it was not enough, as the Cardinal took the Scrum Axe for the first time since 1979. Cal's last loss versus U.S. competition came at the hands of Long Beach State in April of 1990 when the Bears fell 16-14 to the 49ers in the Pacific Coast Championships. Including matches against Canadian teams, Cal's record now stands at 5-2-1 on the season.
