Cal Rugby Prepares for Playoffs
(Overall Record: 12-3)
This Week: No Match.
Bears End Regular Season With Wins: The Bears beat Santa Clara 32-6 Saturday to close out the regular season. Cal rested most of its starting line-up and gave many second string players valuable playing time in the lead-up to the national championships. In turn, a mix of second and third string players stepped into the second match. Their 67-0 win is testament to the squad's depth and bodes well for the future of the program.
Championship Drive: The Bears' immediate goal, however, is a seventh consecutive national title and the squad has stepped up its practice regimen in preparation for the regional playoffs on April 19 and 20. Cal hosts this tournament as well as the national championship final four on May 3 and 4.
In the regionals, Cal will play Indiana University at 2:00pm, Saturday the 19th while Arizona will face off with Air Force in a 12:00 game. The winners of these two matches will play at 2:00pm on Sunday the 20th, preceded by a 12:00 consolation game. With two games in as many days, Cal will need nearly 30 players ready for action, hence the emphasis on gaining experience against Santa Clara and the University of Victoria before that.
Admission to each day of the tournament will be $5.00 for the general public, $3.00 for non-Cal students, and $1.00 for children, seniors and Cal students. Admission is free for Gold and AP cardholders.
Head Coach Jack Clark: Now in his 14th season as Cal's head coach, Jack Clark has a 243-52-4 record, leading the Bears to ten national titles and seeking a seventh consecutive championship in 1997. Clark is a former standout football player at Cal who went on to play rugby for the national team and was a world team selection in 1980. He also serves as head coach for the USA national team, the Eagles.
