BERKELEY - The California men's gymnastics team earned a No. 2 ranking in the preseason coaches poll, it was announced recently. The Golden Bears had four first-place votes for second place in the country, according to the Troester coaches' preseason poll.
"It's good to start the season with a top ranking," Cal head coach Barry Weiner said. "Hopefully we'll finish the year with an even better one."
Despite losing four letterwinners, including NCAA individual champion Evan Roth, the Golden Bears welcome six newcomers and a solid core of 12 experienced returners. Tops on the list of lettermen are senior national team members Glen Ishino and Kyle Bunthuwong, who traveled with the U.S. delegation to the Japan Cup this summer.
Cal also brings back 2009 All-Americans Jim Kerry and Bryan del Castillo. Of the freshman, Swiss national team member Dennis Mannhart and U.S. junior team member Donathan Bailey could make the an impact right away.
Last season, Cal had 13 top-10 individual finishes, marking the first time since 1959 that a Cal team has achieved this feat and only the second time in program history. The Bears finished 2009 at 17-8 overall, one of the best records in recent school history.
The Bears open their 2010 campaign Jan. 15 at home versus top-ranked and reigning national champion Stanford at Haas Pavilion.
