BERKELEY - Junior Glen Ishino was the key to the No. 5 Bears upsetting No. 1-ranked Stanford, 349.650-348.700, on Saturday evening. He handily won the all-around with a 90.300 by almost three full points, making him this week's California Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week. At the close of four rotations, Stanford was in the lead, 234.900-231.400, by winning three of the first four events. But, true to form, the final two rotations sealed victory for the Bears, winning parallel bars and high bar. After losing floor, Cal's first outing - pommel - was a horse of a different color with the Bears taking the event, 56.600-54.850 with Ishino pacing the Bears, this time with a 14.750 to win the event. Cal absolutely dominated on parallel bars with Ishino catapulting the Bears to victory with his first-place 15.550, the only score above 15.000 by any competitor on the event. Ishino helped seal the season-opening victory for the Bears with a first-place finish on high bar at 15.900.
