STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 4 California men's gymnastics team advanced to the team finals of the NCAA Championships with its performance in the qualifiers Thursday evening at Maples Pavilion. The Golden Bears placed third with 357.1 points behind qualifier-winner and top-ranked Stanford (363.850) and second-place No. 5 Illinois (359.300). Kyson Bunthuwong placed third in the all around behind Sho Nakamori and David Sender, both of Stanford. Cal will go for the team title Friday at Maples. Cal, Stanford and Illinois will square off with No. 2 Oklahoma, No. 3 Penn State and No. 6 Michigan, who qualified in the afternoon session. The Golden Bears opened the evening on high bars and scored a collective 57.750. Eric Haeussler opened the event and notched 14.300. Kyle Bunthuwong followed with a 14.450, Tyler Block earned a 14.600, and Colin Christ scored a 14.350. Kyson Bunthuwong recovered from an early spill in his horizontal bar routine with an excellent finish to notch a 14.350
After the first rotation, Cal was in fourth place with a 57.750, and headed to floor exercise for the second rotation. Kyle Bunthuwong scored a 15.000 on floor, which was the team high. Kyle Litow was second on the squad with a 14.700 and Evan Roth was third for Cal with a 14.600.
The Bears took a break from the action on the next routine, which allowed them time to prepare for pommel horse. Kyle Bunthuwong earned a 14.500 and Justin Franklin gave a crowd-pleasing performance for a 13.900. Kyson Bunthwong took second amongst the Bears with a 14.450 but it was Tim McNeill who stole the show with a 15.400, which was good for second place overall.
Cal was on rings for the fourth rotation and Evan Roth paced the Bears with a 15.600 to take third in the qualifier. Kyle Brady was close behind with a 15.550 and Tyler Block rounded out Cal's top three with a 15.300. The Bears finished on vault with a 62.350 behind exceptional outings by Evan Roth (16.150), who was second overall, and Eric Haeussler (15.550).
The Bears excelled on parallel bars despite the absence of Tim McNeill. Kyson Bunthuwong took first overall on parallel bars with a 15.250 and Christ tied for second, scoring a 15.050. Kyle Brady notched at 14.900.
Cal returns to competition Friday evening at 7 p.m. at Maples Pavilion. Live stats can be accessed through gostanford.com for All-Access pass holders. ESPN2 will be televising the event on tape delay on April 24.
