BERKELEY - The No. 4 California men's gymnastics team defeated No. 2 Penn State, 360.400-351.300, on Saturday night at Haas Pavilion. With the win, the Golden Bears improve to 6-5. Junior Kyson Bunthuwong won the all-around with a 90.200 while Penn State's Casey Sandy was second (88.650). Cal won pommel horse, rings, parallel bars and horizontal bar to cinch the win. The Nittany Lions took floor and tied the Bears on vault.

The Nittany Lions won floor exercise, 61.400-58.850, taking the first three places. Santiago Lopez won floor with a 15.550. Competing on floor for the first time in the 2008 campaign, McNeill took fourth with a 15.150. Senior Aaron Moy hit several key tumbling passes to finish sixth with 14.750 on floor exercises. Freshman Kyle Bunthuwong was just behind him, each scoring a 14.550 for seventh.

The Bears took pommel horse thanks to first and second place performances by Kyson Bunthuwong (15.100) and McNeill (14.850), respectively. Casey Sandy finished in third for Penn State with a 14.300. Cal's Justin Franklin established a new career high of 14.150 for fourth place.

California outscored Penn State on rings by 2.15 points, 60.900-58.750. The Bears performed well on still rings, with Tyler Block winning the event with a 15.450. Evan Roth tied his personal best of 15.200 to take second place. Noam Shaham paced the Nittany Lions with a 15.100 (fifth).

The No. 2 Nittany Lions and No. 4 Golden Bears tied on vault, each scoring a 63.050. Casey Sandy won the event with a 16.000 but Moy was on his heels with a 15.950 for second. Santiago Lopez finished third (15.900) and McNeill was fourth (15.850).

Cal held a 240.850-238.550 lead going into the final two rotations and extended that lead with a strong performance on parallel bars. The Bears took the top five places with Kyson Bunthuwong winning the event with a 15.650. Kyle Brady, Colin Christ and Tim McNeill tied for second, each scoring a 15.00. Derek Helsby was PSU's top finished in sixth place with a 14.850.

The Bears dominated horizontal bar, winning the event, 58.900-53.950. Kyson Bunthuwong won with a 15.100. Tyler Block finished second (14.650), Colin Christ took third (14.600) and Kyle Bunthuwong was fourth (14.600) to help Cal win high bar and clinch the meet.

This was the final regular-season meet for the Bears and the nine seniors -- Tyler Block, Kyle Brady, Sean Bryan, Colin Christ, Mark Freeman, Kyle Litow, Tim McNeill, Aaron Moy and Hiroki Yokoyama. Cal will travel to Lincoln, Neb. to compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on April 5 before competing in the NCAA Championships at Stanford on April 17-19.
