Cal Drops Meet to Michigan

BERKELEY - The University of California men's gymnastics team dropped a 439.350-413.400 decision to the University of Michigan Saturday in Ann Arbor, Mich., falling to 4-1 on the season.

As a team, the Bears notched a season-best 69.950 on the parallel bars. Cal also saw strong individual performances on the vault apparatus from junior Matthew del Junco (14.950) and senior Christian Monteclaro (14.900), who placed second and third respectively to contribute to the team's 72.050 overall. Freshman Ryan Patterson registered a 14.000 on the horizontal bar to claim second place. Cal finished with a 68.600 team score on the horizontal bar.

Freshman Kyle Zemeir was the lone Bear entered in the all-around, posting a 78.550 to finish behind Michigan's Adrian de los Angeles at 86.350. Cal also registered a 71.150 on the vault, 66.450 on the pommel horse and 65.200 on the rings.

Next up for four Golden Bears - Zemeir, Glen Ishino, Steven Lacombe and Kevin Wolting - is the 2013 Winter Cup Challenge, set for Feb. 7 to Feb. 9 in Las Vegas. Performances at the Winter Cup will help determine the U.S. Men's Senior National Team through the 2013 U.S. Gymnastics Championships. The entire Golden Bears squad returns to the Bay Area for a meet at Stanford on Feb. 17.
