The California men's gymnastics team defeated No. 1 Stanford in this year's Big Meet at Haas Pavilion on Friday night, 347.25-346.75. The teams were tied going into the final two rotations and Cal's strong performance on the parallel bars gave them the win.
"I've been telling the guys all week that it would come down to the wire," California head coach Barry Weiner said. "I was very proud of the way we finished, but I wasn't thrilled with the way we've started so we've got work to do."
Junior Kyson Bunthuwong took first all-around at 88.45 and freshman Kyle Bunthuwong, in his collegiate debut, took second at 86.45.
In the first events of the meet, Stanford won floor exercises, 58.25-55.45. Kyson Bunthuwong's took first on vault (15.05) and Tim McNeill finished second (14.40) to help Cal defeat Stanford on pommel horse, 57.05-55.25.
The Cardinal edged the Bears on vault by .45, 61.50-61.05, thanks to strong outings by Alex Buscaglia (15.75) and Greg Ter-Zakhariants (15.60). Tyler Block tied Tim Gentry for first on rings (14.90) and Kyle Brady took third (14.45) to lead Cal to victory on rings, 57.60-56.15 to knot the score at 231.15 after four rotations.
Heading into the final rotation, the Bears led the Cardinal, 290.30-290.05. Stanford won the high bar, 58.90-56.95. But the Bears defeated Stanford on parallel bars, 59.15-56.40.
In his collegiate debut, freshman Kyle Bunthuwong paced the Bears with a 14.9 on floor exercises, which was good for second place overall, and third on vault with a 15.5, a team-high for the Bears.
The Bears took first and second on pommel horse with Kyson Bunthuwong placing first (15.05) and Tim McNeill taking second (14.40). Cal put forth a stunning performance on parallel bars, taking places second through seventh.
For the Cardinal, Alex Buscaglia and Greg Ter-Zakhariants took first and second on vault at 15.75 and 15.60, respectively. Bryant Hadden took third for Stanford on floor exercise (14.55) while Tim Gentry finished second on rings (14.90). Ryan Lieberman took first on parallel bars with a 15.15.
