July 1, 2012
Dear Friend of Cal Golf,
This year's 33nd Annual Cal Golf Tournament will be held at Orinda Country Club on September 17, 2012 with entries being mailed out shortly. Please put this date on your calendar and start putting your group together.
Six years ago the Cal Golf Committee decided to conduct a "non-raffle," the proceeds of which went directly to the Cal Golf Scholarship Fund. We are very pleased to say that last year the non-raffle raised close to $20,000 and played a major role in the following accomplishments of what was a great, memorable and historic year:
- Competitively: We finished the 2012 national rankings at #4 in Golfstat and #6 in Golfweek! We tied for fourth in the 54-hole Stroke Play portion of the NCAA Championship at Riviera Country Club to advance to Match Play's Elite Eight. We beat a talented San Diego State in the quarterfinals to advance to the Final Four. We lost a heated battle to Alabama in the semifinals to finish tied for the third in the NCAA Championship. Prior to the NCAA's, we won a school record six times that included the school's first ever Pac-12 Championship and NCAA Regional Championship! Wins also came at Michigan, the MacKenzie, Hawaii and Arizona State. We're also proud to say that we finished in the Top 5 in every event this season. Individually, there were many honors, and most important, we had three All Americans: Max Homa, Third Team; Brandon Hagy and Michael Kim, Honorable Mention. This was a historic season, and with the entire team returning for 2013 season, we are more optimistic than ever about competing for a second NCAA Championship.
- Academically: We are very proud to state that Cal Golf has been recognized as having the highest GPA of all the male sports at Cal with a 3.2 GPA! This summer, Cal Golf will be one of the few programs in the country that will be recognized as an All Academic Team for the FOURTH straight year by the Golf Coaches Association of America. We remain one of the Top 5 academic programs in the Athletic Department, and we can proudly boast that five Cal golfers are in the prestigious Haas School of Business: Jamie Coré, Brandon Hagy, Ben Mangum, Joël Stalter and Michael Weaver (the previous record for Cal Athletics was two players on any male or female team)! Also of note, Brandon Hagy earned First Team All Pac-12 Academic Honors while Joël Stalter earned Honorable Mention All Pac-12 Academic Honors.
Yes, your generosity has helped make all of this possible, and we sincerely hope you will support our wonderful group of student-athletes. Please make your checks payable to U.C. Regents/Cal Men's Golf or make it easy and fill out the credit card slip for a fully deductible contribution to the Cal Golf scholarship fund. Enclosed is a pre-addressed envelope for your convenience. Thank you for your consideration, and we hope to see you at Orinda Country Club on September 17th ... Go Bears!
