California Men's Golf Hosts Junior Golf Heroes from China

Oct. 3, 2008

BERKELEY - The University of California men's golf team is taking part in an international exhibition of sorts this weekend as the Golden Bears host the Junior Golf Heroes from China. A group made up of 10 of the top junior players in the country of China, primarily from Beijing and Shanghai, the Junior Golf Heroes went head-to-head with the Cal golfers on Friday and have another event scheduled for Saturday, weather permitting at Mira Vista Country Club.

An event which had its roots in a trip to Asia by the Cal coaching staff this past summer, it came to fruition with the Junior Golf Heroes making a six-day visit to the Bay Area.

"It's a real honor to host this international competition, especially with some of the top junior players in Asia visiting," Cal head coach Steve Desimone said. "It gives our student-athletes and the young players from China the opportunity to experience different cultures and enjoy some friendly competition. This is one of those things that we're already excited to try to do again and I suspect that may happen in the future."

The Cal golfers return to collegiate tournament action on Monday, Oct. 13 with The Prestige in La Quinta, Calif., their final event of the fall campaign. Cal has posted three top-three finishes in its first three events of the fall.
