SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Members of the Cal men's golf team closed out their 2012 summer action by finishing with the top three spots at the 88th California State Fair Men's Amateur Championship that concluded three days of action at the MacKenzie Golf Club at Haggin Oaks. Brandon Hagy (65-68-67 - 200, -16) won the event, with Max Homa (69-66-66 - 201, -15) and Michael Kim (72-64-66 - 202, -14) one and two strokes back, respectively.
"It was no surprise that Brandon, Michael and Max played as well as they did," Cal head coach Steve Desimone said. "Our top players are really interchangeable. Any one of them can get it going at any time."
Walker Huddy (71-71-66 - 208, -8) and Nick Thomas (70-71-67 - 208, -8) tied for eighth, while Joël Stalter (68-74-68 - 210, -6), James Yoon (74-66-70 - 210, -6) and Michael Weaver (68-69-73 - 210, -6) each tied for 13th. Pace Johnson (68-75-75 - 218, +2) tied for 37th.
Cal begins its 2012-13 campaign at the Gopher Invitational being played at Spring Hill Golf Club in Wayzata, Minn., next Sunday-Monday, Sept. 9-10. The Golden Bears are coming off a season of firsts in 2011-12, including their first match play victory at the NCAA Championship in their first trip to match play at the event. Cal also captured its first NCAA Regional and Pac-12 titles last season, posted a school-record six wins to double the previous mark, and had top-five finishes in all 14 events for the first time in school history.
"It's wonderful momentum going into the Gopher Invitational next week," Desimone said. "The guys on our team have been playing great golf for the last couple of years, really. I'm looking forward to getting to Minneapolis next week and very much looking forward to getting back into competition as the Cal golf team. I like our chances to be very, very competitive."
