RIVERSIDE, Iowa - The Golden Bears sit in the middle of the pack of 15 teams, all from different conferences, as California's two veterans recorded the best scores of the day for the Bears in round one of Golfweek's Collegiate Conference Challenge. Cal is 16 shots off the lead, in 8th place at 8-over, with Baylor in the lead at 8-under.

Eric Mina opened his round with a birdie, sinking three on the front nine and two more after the turn, to temper three bogies and reach the clubhouse at 2-under and a tie for 7th. Stephen Hale had five birdies to end his round even and escape his double bogey on the seventh hole and three additional bogeys, good for a tie for 16th.

Among the three newcomers playing for the Bears today, Max Homa (T37) birdied 17 and 18 to end his day strongly, though his double bogey on 15 hampered him as he ended Sunday at 3-over. Chad Vivolo (T67) carded two double bogies but righted his round over the final seven holes, with a birdie on the par-5 16th hole for his 7-over 79. Michael Weaver (T72) weathered a double bogey on the second hole and suffered seven more bogies to end his first round for Cal at 9-over.

With the top-four scores counting toward the day's tally, Weaver's round did not figure into the team score.

Play resumes with round two tomorrow, with live scoring available at Golfstat.com.
