LAS VEGAS - Senior Dan Arroyo and junior Dong Yi each fired 71s to lead the California men's golf team to a final round 5-over-par 293 at the Golf Digest Invitational, Sunday. However, the 19th-ranked Golden Bears still managed to lose ground on the leader board, finishing 13th in the 15-team field with a final score of 32-over 896.
Hometown favorite and defending national champion UNLV, bolstered by a blistering 12-under-par 276 final round, captured the team title with a three-day score of 855, nine strokes under par. Georgia, which led after two rounds finished second at 5-under 859, followed by Oklahoma State in third at 2-under 862.
Arroyo, who was tied for 40th after two days of play, moved up eight positions to finish tied for 32nd with his 1-under final round, while Yi jumped all the way from tied for 63rd to tied for 47th. Senior Dan Coyle carded a 3-over 75 during Sunday's action to closed out the tournament tied for 47th. Junior Han Lee and senior Jay Berkowitz finished tied for 62nd.
The Bears, who have played in tournaments in three of the last four weeks, have a three-week break before returning to the links for their next event at the Western Intercollegiate, April 5-6, from Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz. The two-day tournament is hosted by San Jose State University.
