SAN DIEGO - It's not often that you get to pose for photos and dance with a sea lion, pet small sharks and see dolphins close up, but that's what was in store for three Cal football players during the team's visit to SeaWorld on Saturday.
Shortly after the Bears arrived and were warmly greeted by a Holiday Bowl welcoming committee, seniors Sean Cattouse, Justin Cheadle and Trevor Guyton were whisked away for a backstage tour of the San Diego venue.
"It was amazing, a really good experience," Cheadle said. "I'm so glad I got to do it."
Although Cheadle enjoyed the experience, he also experienced a little more than he bargained for.
"He sat his big head on my head and I felt drips coming down my forehead and into my mouth," Cheadle said of his photo session with 24-year-old sea lion Clyde. "It was seawater and it was kind of gross."
Despite the slight mishap that Cheadle shrugged off with good cheer and a few laughs, the entire group of Bears enjoyed a few hours to relax and enjoy a San Diego tradition that was founded in 1964.
But it wasn't all fun and games on Saturday as the Bears went through an intense early afternoon practice under a hot December sun in beautiful weather conditions at San Diego State before the team's visit to SeaWorld.
"It was another good day of preparation," Giorgio Tavecchio said. "We're one day closer to the game."
The Bears will continue to practice and take part in bowl week activities each day up leading up to the team's meeting with Texas in the 2011 Bridgepoint Holiday Bowl at Snapdragon Stadium by Qualcomm on Wednesday, Dec. 28 (5 p.m. PST).
On Christmas morning, it's off to a visit of the San Diego Zoo. The Bears will then practice again at San Diego State in the afternoon before returning to the team hotel for a Christmas dinner.
