CHICAGO, Ill. - Wide receiver Keenan Allen became the first player in the nation to be nominated a second time for the GEICO Play of the Year when he was one of four weekly nominees announced Monday by Intersport for the week of games ending Oct. 13. To watch the play and vote once a day for Allen, visit facebook.com/BestofCollegeFootball through this Sunday, Oct. 28, at 9:59 a.m. PT.
Allen's second nomination of the season came for his 69-yard touchdown reception in a 31-17 Cal victory at Washington State on October 13. Midway through the first quarter, Cal snapped the ball from its own 31-yard line and quarterback Zach found Allen on a short slant. The speedster was able to turn and slip between his man and the safety leaving him with just one player to beat. Allen did a little stutter-step, leaving the hapless defender sprawled on the ground on his way to the end zone. The score gave the Bears a 7-0 lead. Allen finished the game with season highs of 11 receptions and 166 yards receiving.
Allen was previously one of four nominees in the opening week of the season for his 39-yard touchdown run on a reverse against Nevada.
Each week for eight weeks, four incredible college football plays will be nominated as the Play of the Year on the GEICO Best of College Football Facebook page facebook.com/BestofCollegeFootball. The eight weekly winners will then faceoff in a week of finals voting from November 4-11 to determine the 2012 GEICO Play of the Year. The winner will be announced on GEICO Best of College Football on CBS Nov. 23 at 1:30 p.m. ET/10:30 a.m. PT.
In addition to recognizing the season's top plays, the one-hour CBS special will relive the season's greatest moments, players and traditions. The show also marks the culmination of the GEICO "Best of 2012" Football Tour, an interactive fan experience that visits 30 marquee games throughout the football season.
