BERKELEY - Three former Cal football players will be on opening day rosters for the inaugural 2009 season of the United Football League. Guard Erik Robertson will suit up for the New York Sentinels, while both long snapper Nick Sundberg and linebacker Worrell Williams are members of the California Redwoods.
Robertson started 24 of 25 possible games over his last two seasons at Cal in 2005 and 2006. As a senior, he earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors and was named the team's Most Valuable Offensive Lineman when he started all 13 games while batting various injuries. He also earned honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic recognition in each of his final two seasons with the Golden Bears. Robertson signed with the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent in the summer of 2007 and spent the 2008 NFL campaign on the practice squad of the Seattle Seahawks.
Sundberg played as a long snapper in all 50 games possible over his four-year career at Cal from 2004-08, taking over the position in his first game as a true freshman in 2005 and never relinquishing the job. Sundberg was signed as a free agent by the Carolina Panthers in April of 2009 and spent time on the team's roster before being released prior to the current campaign.
Williams also played his four seasons at Cal from 2004-08 and recorded 246 career tackles to rank 11th on Cal's all-time list. He played in 49 games and made 36 starts, adding 2.5 sacks, 19.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 11 pass breakups to his career defensive totals. He had his best statistical season as a junior in 2007 when he recorded a career-high 105 tackles to rank eighth in the Pac-10 and also returned the first fumble recovery of his career for a touchdown in a victory over Tennessee in the season-opener. As a senior, he earned more recognition even though his tackles dropped to 64, earning honorable mention All-Pac-10 notice and the team's Most Improved Player honor.
The four-team United Football League starts its 2009 campaign with a pair of games this week. The Redwoods travel to face the Las Vegas Locomotives in the first ever UFL game at Sam Boyd Stadium this Thursday, Oct. 8 (6 pm PT, Versus). Two days later on Saturday, Oct. 10 (7 pm ET, HDNet) the Florida Tuskers will host the Sentinels at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla.
