September 29, 2008 BERKELEY - Junior Syd'Quan Thompson led the Golden Bears to a 42-7 victory over Colorado State on Saturday. The cornerback had a breakout day as a punt returner while also leading the team with nine tackles, including his second sack of the season, making him the Muscle Milk California Student-Athlete of the Week. Thompson, who took over punt return duties in Cal's last game against Maryland, tallied a respectable 23 yards on his first three efforts Saturday. Then, on his fourth return, he broke free from two tacklers and dodged the remaining defenders en route to a 73-yard touchdown return for a 28-0 Cal advantage. On the very next drive, Thompson broke free again, but had to "settle" for a 35-yard return. His 131 yards contributed to Cal's school-record 187 punt-return yards in the game. Thompson, who was named the Pac-10 Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance, leads the team in punt-return average, interceptions, pass breakups, solo tackles and sacks.
