OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Offensive lineman Matt Summers-Gavin was one of 30 NCAA® Football Bowl Subdivision student-athletes who excel both on and off the field selected Thursday as candidates for the prestigious 2012 Senior CLASS Award® given annually to an NCAA Division I FBS senior who excels in community, classroom, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the 2012 regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.

Summers-Gavin has played in 33 games with 26 starts at either right (14) or left (12) tackle during his Cal career he first got on the field for the Golden Bears in 2009, with his 26 career starts the second most among Cal's active players. Summers-Gavin is also a national honors, All-American and Campbell Trophy candidate as a 2012 senior, and is on the watch list for the Outland Trophy given to college football's top interior lineman on either side of the ball. He also earned first-team preseason All-Pac-12 honors from both Phil Steele and Blue Ribbon, while being named to the second team by Athlon and third team by Lindy's. He is coming off a 2011 campaign in which he earned third-team All-Pac-12 honors from Steele and an honorable mention nod from the league's coaches. In 2009, Summers-Gavin earned second-team Freshman All-American honors by Rivals and was a third-team Freshman All-American according to Steele.

Summers-Gavin graduated in May of 2012 with a 3.268 GPA and is taking what is called a reduced course load to be eligible to play football as a fifth-year senior in 2012. Summers-Gavin is a three-time Pac-10/12 All-Academic selection, picking up second-team recognition as both a 2009 redshirt freshman and 2011 junior, as well as an honorable mention nod as a 2010 sophomore.

Off the field and out of the classroom, he has volunteered extensively during his time at Cal primarily through the Sage Mentorship Program, spending two years volunteering at John Muir Elementary School in Berkeley, tutoring and mentoring a young girl both in and out of the classroom in a "big brother" role.

Cal (1-2, 0-0 Pac-12) is next in action on the road for its Pac-12 opener against USC (2-1, 0-1 Pac-12) at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum this Saturday, Sept. 22 (3 p.m. PT). The Trojans are the nation's No. 12 ranked team according to USA Today, while AP has USC at No. 13. Both Cal and USC are coming off seven-point road losses at Ohio State and Stanford, respectively.

Cal's remaining 2012 home games include matchups with Pac-12 foes Arizona State, UCLA, Stanford, Washington and Oregon. In addition to the game at USC, the Golden Bears still play on the road at Washington State, Utah and Oregon State.
