California Heisman Trophy candidate Jahvid Best addressed the media Wednesday following a Cal football practice at Memorial Stadium. Following are selected comments of what he had to say.
TAILBACK JAHVID BEST
On this week's workouts in advance of this Saturday's game at Minnesota
"It's been good. We've put in a lot of work, and we've got a good game plan so we're just ready to go out there and execute."
On preparations for the first road game of the 2009 season
"We've just got to focus. We're not going to have our crowd backing us, and it's not going to be our atmosphere, but at the end of the day the only thing that matters is what happens on the field. It shouldn't be too much of a difference for us."
On Minnesota's defense
"They're a big, physical group. It's going to be a really physical game up front. We're looking forward to it. They can still move, but they're definitely a bigger group than we've seen this year."
On being the "marked man" every week
"I just know that since I am the marked man, I have to be on my "P's and Q's" every play. I can't mess up. I can't afford to mess up. It just keeps me studying the playbook and keeps me getting ready for the games."
On national title aspirations
"It just makes it that much more important to pay attention to details and our game plan, and just execute and focus on every play. Every play matters from now on."
On the mystique of the Pac-10 and Big Ten playing each other
"We're aware of it, but our main goal is to go out there and just win. We're not worried about the conferences vs. the conferences. It's just us vs. them this week."
On whether getting more exposure on a national level in this game excites him
On Minnesota's linebackers
"It does but like I said at the end of the day the only thing that matters is what happens on the field. My main focus is going to be on executing."
"They're big, physical guys. Their d-line is huge, and their linebackers are huge. It's going to be a physical game."
On whether Minnesota's linebackers remind him of Cal's 2008 linebackers
"They're definitely a lot bigger, but as far as playmaking abilities they're about the same."
