BERKELEY - Cal junior Keenan Allen was named a national Punt Returner Performer of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards for his performance against Southern Utah on Saturday. Allen had the first punt return touchdown of his career when he brought a punt back 69 yards for a score in the fourth quarter. Allen finished with three punt returns for 94 yards, with one of his other returns going for 25 yards.
Allen added five catches for 69 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown reception that extended Cal's lead to 27-17, and one rush for four yards for a game-high 167 all-purpose yards in a 50-31 victory over the Thunderbirds.
Allen leads the Pac-12 and ranks fourth nationally on the season with a 22.2 yards per punt return average, returning six punts for 133 yards and a touchdown. He is also fourth in the Pac-12 and tied for 25th nationally with an average of 154.00 all-purpose yards per contest, adding 11 catches for 136 yards and a touchdown as well as four rushes for 39 yards and a score. His three touchdowns are a team-best, while his 18 points are second on the club in scoring and first among non-kickers. His 9.0 points per game rank tied for 10th in the Pac-12 and tied for 50th nationally.
Cal (1-1, 0-0 Pac-12) is next in action on the road at No. 12 (AP) Ohio State this Saturday, Sept. 15 (12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT). The contest will be televised live by ABC, and the radio broadcast will be available on the Cal IMG Sports Radio Network with KGO 810 in San Francisco serving as the flagship station.
Cal's remaining 2012 home contests include five games against Pac-12 foes Arizona State, Oregon, Stanford, Washington and UCLA.
