BERKELEY - Jahvid Best ran wild in Cal's Pac-10 opening victory against Washington State on Saturday, finishing the day with 200 yards and three touchdowns on just 14 carries for an average of 14.3 yards per carry, making the sophomore from Vallejo, Calif., the Muscle Milk California Student-Athlete of the Week.
On the first play of the WSU game, played in Pullman, Wash., Best took a handoff and darted through the hole for a career-best 80-yard touchdown run. In the third quarter, on his final carry, he found another hole and simply out-sprinted the Cougar defenders for an 86-yard scoring run. Best also scored on a five-yard run on a direct snap in the second quarter.
Prior to Saturday, Cal had never had multiple 80-yard runs in one season, let alone in the same game. Best is the first Cal player since J.J. Arrington in 2004 to open a season with back-to-back 100-yard rushing games.
