March to Victory Luncheon | Fan Appreciation Day | Meet the Bears | Lowe's Senior CLASS Award®
OVERLAND PARK, KS -
Linebacker Mike Mohamed has been selected as one of 30 national candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award® in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Mohamed was chosen for excelling both on and off the field. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award® focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on a national ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select a finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
Lowe's will announce the Senior Class Award® winner at the conclusion of the regular season.
Mohamed is Cal's active career leader in tackles with 245 and will begin the 2010 campaign only six shy of entering the school's all-time top-10 list. In 2009, he led the Pac-10 with a career-high 112 tackles and earned first-team all-conference honors. He is on track to graduate in the fall of 2010 with a bachelor's degree in business administration with a current cumulative GPA of 3.45. One of the senior leaders on this season's football squad, Mohamed has also been one of the team's most active players in the community. He has volunteered an extensive amount of his time serving as a member of the local community and is heavily involved in The Sage Project mentorship program that matches up Cal student-athletes with a local youth for one-on-one mentoring.
Mohamed's long list of 2010 national preseason recognition also includes being selected to the prestigious Playboy All-America squad, as well as additional All-American selections by The Kickoff (second team), National Champs.net, Phil Steele and Rivals (third team), and College Football Insiders (honorable mention). In addition, he is on watch lists for the Chuck Bednarik Award, Rotary Lombardi Award, The Lott Trophy and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, and is a preseason favorite for the College Football Performance Awards Linebacker Trophy. He is also a preseason 2010 first-team All-Pac-10 choice of Athlon, Lindy's and Phil Steele.

When Cal takes the field for the first time in 2010, the Golden Bears will do so as one of the most accomplished Pac-10 teams of the last eight years. Cal's 67 victories over that period (an average of 8.4 wins per season) are the second-most by a Pac-10 squad. The Bears have a current school-record-tying string of eight consecutive winning seasons, making head coach Jeff Tedford one of only eight FBS coaches with an active winning streak of at least that length. Cal has also won five bowl games, made seven bowl appearances and captured seven Big Games over Stanford during Tedford's tenure - all at least equaling school records for a Cal coach.
