Cal Holds Morning Session on Friday

Aug. 17, 2007

Berkeley -

Fresh off its scheduled scrimmage on Thursday evening, the California football team returned to the practice field for more drills on Friday morning in Memorial Stadium.

After reviewing film of the first scrimmage, head coach Jeff Tedford remained pleased in general with his team's performance. "I thought our first offensive line played pretty well; the pass protection and run blocking. I felt like our running backs ran pretty well with real good vision and made good cuts. Defensively, we still need to solidify who are front is going to be and keep giving people reps."

The defense was plenty active in practice, as the defensive backs made nice breaks on the ball, while the defensive line disrupted quarterback play. Worrell Williams and Marcus Ezeff both garnered interceptions, while Syd'Quan Thompson recovered nicely on a route to swat the ball away before it reached the intended receiver. Scott Smith batted a pass at the line of scrimmage, while Zack Follett used his speed to shut down some running plays.

The offense still continued to fine tune its game plan, as quarterback Nate Longshore utilized several targets, including Lavelle Hawkins and Craig Stevens.

Cal resumes practice with a double-day session tomorrow.

California opens the 2007 season on Saturday, Sept. 1, hosting Tennessee at Memorial Stadium in a 5 p.m. contest. Single-game tickets are also available for all games except Tennessee, USC and Stanford. Season tickets are currently available by visiting www.CalBears.com or by calling 1-800-GO-BEARS.
