The California football team practiced for the first time in pads in Memorial Stadium, completing 28 periods of drills on Friday.

"It's more realistic (practicing in full pads)," said head coach Jeff Tedford. "You get to see where the guys are at -- they really went after it today. It was great to see them flying around like that."

The Bears continued to fine tune both the offense and defense in the 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 sessions. Quarterback Nate Longshore utilized tight ends Craig Stevens and Cameron Morrah on a few occasions and found DeSean Jackson for a pair of long gains. Freshmen Jahvid Best and Shane Vereen continued their impressive camps with several long runs, while Justin Forsett displayed some nifty cutbacks and runs for sizeable gains.

Defensively, Brett Johnson had an interception, while defensive backs Gary Doxy and Brandon Hampton recorded a pair of pass breakups. John Allen and Zack Follett both recorded sacks as well.

Cal resumes practice tomorrow, first with a morning session in shells and an evening practice in full pads. As a reminder ALL PRACTICES ARE CLOSED to the PUBLIC.

California opens the 2007 season on Saturday, Sept. 1, hosting Tennessee at Memorial Stadium in a 5 p.m. contest. Season tickets are currently available by visiting www.CalBears.com or by calling 1-800-GO-BEARS.
