DALLAS, Texas - Cal senior tailback Isi Sofele was named Thursday as a preseason candidate for the 2012 Doak Walker Award presented annually to the nation's top college running back. The award, in its 23rd year, is named for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. Sofele was named earlier in the month to the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award given annually to college football's top player overall.

Sofele posted the sixth-most rushing yards in school history in 2011 during his first campaign as a starter, running for 1,322 yards to give Cal nine 1,000-yard rushers in the past 10 seasons. He is one of only two active Cal players to have played in all 38 games possible over the last three seasons with career totals of 1,742 yards rushing, 11 rushing touchdowns, 333 carries, 13 overall touchdowns and 78 points. His five career 100-yard rushing games, all in 2011, rank him one outside the school's all-time top 10 list. He is Cal's active career leader in all listed categories.

In addition to the Sept. 1 season-opener vs. Nevada, Cal's seven-game home schedule in 2012 includes contests against Pac-12 foes Arizona State, Oregon, Stanford, Washington and UCLA, as well as a non-conference game against Southern Utah.
