May 19, 2010 Phil Steele's 2010 Preseason All-American and All-Pac-10 Teams BERKELEY - Linebacker Mike Mohamed and punter Bryan Anger have both been chosen as third-team All-Americans and first-team All-Pac-10 selections for 2010 preseason honors announced Wednesday by Phil Steele. Mohamed will be one of Cal's most experienced players in 2010, having participated in all 39 games over the last three seasons with 16 starts. He is Cal's active leader in career tackles with 245 and has posted other career totals of 15.0 tackles for loss (-58 yards), 5.0 sacks (-37 yards), six interceptions (36 return yards), two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He will long be remembered in Cal football history for his interception at the Golden Bears' own three-yard line that thwarted a potential game-winning Stanford drive and clinched a 34-28 Cal victory in the 2009 Big Game on The Farm. He also returned one of his three interceptions in 2008 for a touchdown during a 41-20 win over UCLA. Mohamed received first-team All-Pac-10 honors in 2009 for the first time in his career when he led the conference with 112 tackles, while adding 8.0 tackles for loss and a team-high three interceptions. He was named the Pac-10 Player of the Week twice after his performances in victories at Arizona State (12 tackles, 11 solo) and Stanford (10 tackles, 0.5 TFL, game-clinching interception). Mohamed was also selected as Cal's defensive MVP in 2009 by his teammates. In addition to his performances on the field, Mohamed has been honored on the Pac-10 All-Academic team three times, earning first team recognition in each of the last two years. In 2009, he also earned a spot on the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic District 8 First-Team for the first time in his career.
Defensive lineman Cameron Jordan, tight end Anthony Miller, punt returner Jeremy Ross, offensive linemen Mitchell Schwartz and Matt Summers-Gavin, and tailback Shane Vereen were second-team preseason All-Pac-10 choices. Safety Sean Cattouse, defensive lineman Derrick Hill, wide receiver Marvin Jones and linebacker Mychal Kendricks picked up third-team All-Pac-10 honors, while offensive lineman Chris Guarnero was a fourth-team Pac-10 pick. Cal opens its 2010 season vs. UC Davis on Saturday, Sept. 4. The upcoming campaign will be the final year with the current configuration of Memorial Stadium and also includes visits from Arizona State, Colorado, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA and Washington during a seven-game home schedule.
