Senior Linebacker Listed For Two Major National Honors

BERKELEY - California senior linebacker Zack Follett has joined teammate Alex Mack in the preseason honor roll call. Mack, who has been tabbed as a player to watch on three separate lists, is joined by Follett, who is a top preseason candidate for the Bronco Nagurski Award (nation's top defensive player) and the Ronnie Lott Impact Trophy (defensive player who excels most on and off the field).

Follett, a two-time All-Pac-10 honoree, has developed into the team defensive leader for the Golden Bears. The hard-hitting linebacker has recorded team-bests of 13 career sacks and 28 tackles for loss while also forcing eight fumbles in his career. Last year, he earned the team's Berkeley Breakfast Club Award as Cal's top defensive player in the Big Game against Stanford. He also had impressive performances against UCLA (season-high 10 tackles) and against Tennessee in the season-opener when he drilled Volunteer quarterback Erik Ainge on the opening drive, forcing a fumble which was recovered by teammate Worrell Williams for a touchdown.

The Lott Trophy selected 42 of the nation's top collegiate defensive for its 2008 Watch List. Named after Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott, The Lott Trophy is the first college football award to equally recognize athletic performance and the personal character attributes of the player. Sponsored by The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, the award is given to a player who exhibits the same characteristics Lott embodied during his distinguished career: Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity. Former Golden Bear Daymeion Hughes was the winner of the honor in 2006. The winner will be announced at a gala black-tie banquet at The Pacific Club in Newport Beach, Ca. on December 14th, 2008. The Nagurski Trophy, sponsored by the Charlotte Touchdown Club, is selected by Football Writers Association of America's All-America Committee from the association's 11-man All-America defensive team in November. The watch list was developed by the FWAA All-America committee with the help of the schools and conferences. The Charlotte Touchdown Club will hold the 2008 banquet on Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte. The award has been presented since 1993 and is awarded in memory of the legendary Nagurski, a former All-America lineman at Minnesota in 1927-29 and a star for professional football's Chicago Bears in the 1930s.

Follett was also on the Watch List for last year's Butkus Trophy for the top linebacker in the nation. The 2008 Watch List for that award has not been released at this time.
