BERKELEY - Three mid-year enrollees -- PK Matt Anderson, QB Jared Goff and WR Drake Whitehurst - officially joined the Cal football program Tuesday when 2013 spring semester classes began at the University of California, head coach Sonny Dykes announced. Anderson (Danville, CA/San Ramon Valley HS) and Goff (Kentfield, CA/Marin Catholic HS) are true freshmen, while Whitehurst (Portland, OR/City College of San Francisco/Lincoln HS) is a junior transfer. All three are expected to participate in 2013 spring football practices. "All of our mid-year enrollees are great fits at Cal athletically and academically," Dykes said. "We are excited about the addition of these three excellent student-athletes to our football program. We have addressed several of our needs with an outstanding group of mid-year enrollees that also included a pair of signees last December. We're excited that they are all here now and ready to hit the ground running." Anderson ranks second nationally in the 2013 recruiting class among kickers according to Scout, while none of the major recruiting services list him lower than 11th. He was selected for the 2013 Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl and Cal State Game following his senior season. Anderson was a consensus three-star choice - the highest star rating a kicker can hold. "Matt is one of the top kickers in the country with great range and accuracy," Dykes said. "We are looking forward to him gaining experience at the collegiate level and making significant contributions early in his collegiate career." Goff ranks as high as eighth nationally among quarterbacks and 140th on Rivals' list of all 2013 recruits, while he was a consensus four-star pick of the five major recruiting services (247Sports, ESPN, MaxPreps, Scout, Rivals). As a three-year starter at nearby Marin Catholic High School, he led his squad to a 39-4 record and three Marin County League titles, as well as a North Coast Section crown and an appearance in the 2012 state championship game as a senior. Goff combined to throw for 6,902 yards and 85 touchdowns over his final two campaigns. He was selected to the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl and Cal State Game following his 2012 senior season in which he was named the San Francisco Chronicle's Metro Player of the Year after passing for 3,692 yards and 40 touchdowns while leading his squad to the CIF Division III state championship bowl game. An Elite 11 finalist in the summer of 2012, Goff is the second quarterback in as many seasons to enroll mid-year at Cal following Zach Kline in January of 2012. "Jared Goff was an accomplished and mature quarterback at the high school level," Dykes said. "Especially at that position, it is advantageous to get a head start adjusting to the game at the collegiate level. We're excited to have Jared on board and to get that process started. We're looking forward to his contributions at Cal." Whitehurst blossomed in his second season as a sophomore at City College of San Francisco in 2012, catching 29 passing for 286 yards and four touchdowns after seeing limited playing time on a 2011 squad that won the national junior college title. He was primarily focused on basketball during his prep days at Lincoln High School in Portland, Ore. "We feel like Drake Whitehurst is only beginning to scratch the surface of his football abilities," Dykes said. "He will fit our system well and has the physical ability to develop into an outstanding player at the inside receiver position." The trio joins junior college transfers DE Kyle Kragen (Danville, CA/Diablo Valley College/San Ramon Valley HS) and DE Sione Sina (Elk Grove, CA/College of San Mateo/Monterey Trail HS) to round out Cal's group of five mid-year enrollees. Kragen and Sina signed National Letters of Intent in December. The remainder of Cal's 2013 signing class can be announced beginning February 6 on National Signing Day, which kicks off the regular period for 2013-14 football signees running until April 1. Cal has put together a signing class that has ranked among the top 15 in the nation each of the last three years, ranking as high as No. 11 by Rivals in 2010, No. 13 according to Scout in 2011 and No. 15 on a list produced by MaxPreps in 2012. The Golden Bears' 2013 schedule begins with three consecutive nonconference home games at Memorial Stadium against Northwestern (Aug. 31), Portland State (Sept. 7) and Ohio State (Sept. 14). After a bye week, Cal opens its Pac-12 slate at Oregon (Sept. 28) before hosting Washington State on Homecoming Weekend (Oct. 5). Cal will also host Oregon State (Oct. 19) and Arizona (Nov. 2) before concluding its home schedule against USC (Nov. 9). In addition to the Oregon and Stanford games, Cal will be on the road for conference tilts at UCLA (Oct. 12), Washington (Oct. 26) and Colorado (Nov. 16). Kickoff times and television selections for all Cal regular-season games will be announced at later dates. The Pac-12 Championship Game will be televised by either ESPN or ABC and played Dec. 7 between the winners of the conference's North and South divisions at the home of the team with the best record.
