Nov. 1, 1997
California-Oregon State Game Notes
California (3-5, 1-4) returned home to Memorial Stadium for the
first time in three weeks and defeated Oregon State (3-5, 0-5),
33-14. It was the Bears first conference win after seven
straight league losses dating back to last season. Cal's last
league win was Nov. 2, 1996 in the triple overtime victory over
Arizona (56-55). The Bears now have a 30-20 edge in the rivalry
versus Oregon State, which dates back to the 1905 season. The
Bears have won five straight and 14 of the last 20 games versus
the Beavers. Cal has won 21 of the 31 games played in Berkeley,
including 11 of the past 13 tilts.
Cal's 26 points in the second quarter were the fifth-most
points the Bears have ever scored in a quarter. It was the most
points Cal scored in a single quarter since the Bears tallied
24 points versus Washington State Nov. 4, 1995 at Memorial
Stadium.
For the game, Cal had 423 yards of total offense. That
represents the fifth time this season the Bears have had over
400 yards of total offense.
Oregon State only had six yards of total offense in the first
quarter and the Beavers didn't complete their first pass until
1:19 left in the first half. For the game, Oregon State only
had 207 yards, the fewest yards since Cal allowed 165 yards at
Houston Sept. 6. The Beavers 14 points are the fewest points
the Bears have yielded to a conference opponent since Cal gave
up 11 points to Washington State in a 27-11 victory at Memorial
Stadium Nov. 4, 1995.
Cal, which entered the Oregon State game with just 16 sacks on
the season, had five sacks for minus 35 yards today. Senior
Brandon Whiting had one sack today and now has five sacks for
the '97 season. Whiting is currently in third place on the Cal
all-time career sack list with 21.5 sacks. He needs only one
more sack to move past Ron Rivera (1980-83) for second place on
the career sack list.
Senior wide receiver Bobby Shaw, who led the Pac-10 and ranked
third in the country with an average of 8.14 receptions per
game entering today's game, finished the contest with four
catches for 27 yards. Shaw needs just two more catches to pass
Brian Treggs for Cal's all-time reception mark. He now has 166
receptions in his career, while Treggs grabbed 167 catches from
1988-91.
A semifnalist for the 1997 Fred Biletnikoff Award, Shaw already
owns the school mark for receiving yardage with 2,586 yards. He
also has 11 100-yard receiving games, better than the previous
Cal mark of eight set by Wesley Walker from 1973-76. With a
total of 61 receptions this season, Shaw is just five catches
shy of setting a new school record for single season receptions
set by Sean Dawkins (65 in 1992). In terms of yards, Shaw now
has 948 yards and needs just 123 yards to pass Dawkins (1070
yards in 1992) for the top spot.
Junior Dameane Douglas had a season-best day yardage-wise with
85 yards on five catches and two touchdown receptions. It was
Douglas' third 80-yard plus day of his career.
Today, Tarik Smith had a season-high 90 yards in the first half
and finished the day with 125 yards on 25 carries. It was
Smith's best rushing performance since Sept. 14, 1996 when he
had 174 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries. It was his
third 100-yard plus rushing effort of his career. Fellow
tailback Marcus Fields 31-yard touchdown run with 12:57 in the
second quarter was a career-long run from scrimage. Fields had
54 yards on 11 carries and one touchdown.
Cal quarterback Justin Vedder threw four touchdowns in the
first half, which was the most touchdowns he has thrown in a
single game as the Bears quarterback. Vedder finished the day
16-for-28 for 215 yards with four touchdowns and one
interception. He had now thrown for 2,092 yards and 17
touchdowns this season. Vedder needs 251 more yards in the next
three games to move into the Cal Top 10 single season list for
passing yards.
