California Postgame Quotes
Cal Head Coach Jeff Tedford
On what the team will take from the loss:
"It's quite obvious the tone will be set that we'll go back to work and work hard. It's not anything different than we ever do. This is going to sting for awhile.
"You evaluate every part of the program and try to improve. "
About the performance of Utah:
"You have to give Utah a lot of credit - they're a good defensive team. They did a great job controlling the line. They did a lot of nice things on defense and you have to give them credit.
"They hit some big plays. They protected the passer pretty well. I thought (their) quarterback did really well controlling the ball. So, they executed well and made some plays."
On his team's performance:
"I thought the defense did a nice job containing. They made a great play on special teams. We had too many three-and-outs and you can't do that, but a lot of it had to do with what they (Utah) were doing. There were a lot of plays we didn't make."
TB Shane Vereen
On the turning point in the game:
"It was really a snow-ball effect. We were on track in the beginning and then we just lost our execution."
QB Kevin Riley
About Utah's performance:
"They did a good job with close coverage. They just took us out of our game."
LB Eddie Young
About Utah's performance:
"They made plays and we didn't. They got big plays on us and then extended their drives."
Utah Postgame Quotes
Utah Head Coach Kyle Whittingham
On Jordan Wynn:
"We think a lot of Jordan Wynn. He came out a little bit unsettled at first. He got great protection from the offensive line, gave a strong run game to support him. He's unflappable. Ice water in his veins."
About performance of David Reed:
"He's an unflappable guy. He's got a great deal of confidence. I think he broke both the reception and reception yardage record for our school."
On the improvement on the defense:
"We tackled better. The first run out of the gate, we had a gap, a missed assignment...but from that point forward we played well. The essence of good defense is good tackling."
About the team's performance - what's their winning formula:
"The work ethic of our players - I believe our players out-play other teams in the game. It's how our guys go about their business. They know (a bowl game) is a reward for a good season. This (nine-game bowl game) winning streak isn't just about these players, this goes back a ways, and these guys extended it further.
"We don't think we have the corner on the market, but I always come back to the same thing, we run we condition and do everything that we do in a fall two a day - we don't have two a days but it's very similar."
On his coaching staff:
"They're hard workers and good coaches. They're all pulling in the same direction and each of our guys is an expert in their position. We have a great staff and they recruit really well and that's the nuts and bolts of it.
RB Shaky Smithson
On Jordan Wynn bouncing back from a slow start:
"That's just a testament to our team. We had adversity early and we just fight back. That's all we do."
RB Eddie Wide
On winning nine straight bowl games:
"It's maintaining the tradition - good to keep it going. It's a special thing and I'm glad we are able to continue it."
On gaining the tough yardage:
"They (Cal) have a great defense. They did a great job of stopping our run. Our pass offense was really good."
QB Jordan Wynn
On being down 14-0:
"I just had to know that it was early in the game and I had to let it go. As a quarterback, you need to have a short memory. The offense as a whole picked me up and we came away with a win. I really just kept thinking that it was early in the game. There was so much time left, especially with how explosive our offense can be. There was no reason to worry yet. It was early in the game and we knew we had to get back into it, and we did.
"As a quarterback, the game is on your shoulders. I just look at this as another opportunity this program is giving me. There is definitely a level of comfort here and it's great to get a bowl win back at home."
