BERKELEY -With today's 27-17 Arizona State victory, Cal fell to 1-4, 0-2 on the season. It was the first time the Sun Devils beat the Golden Bears in five years and only the second time in Jeff Tedford's tenure at Cal. It was also the first time ASU beat Cal at Memorial Stadium since 1997.
Keenan Allen hauled in four catches for 79 yards and a touchdown on the day. The receiving touchdown was his second of the season and the 13th of his career, which ties him for eighth all-time at Cal. His first catch of the day was good for 44 yards, a season high.
Allen now has 177 career receptions. That total ranks fourth all-time at Cal and is three shy of Bobby Shaw's third-place total of 180. He also has 2,221 career receiving yards, which ranks seventh all-time at Cal, as he passed Na'il Benjamin and Wesley Walker today. Marvin Jones is sixth with 2,270 career receiving yards while Brian Treggs and Dameane Douglas are tied for fourth with 2,335 yards each.
Allen also extended his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 29 - every game he's played in at Cal. Heading into today's action, the streak ranked tied for eighth nationally and tied for first in the Pac-12.
On Cal's first drive of the game, Isi Sofele rattled off a season-high 32-yard rush. On Cal's second drive, Sofele reached 2,000-career rushing yards. He now has 2,075 for his career. On the day, he finished with 15 carries for 105 yards and his second touchdown run of the season - 13th of his career. He also posted his seventh career 100-yard rushing performance - second this season - which ranks 10th all-time in school history.
C.J. Anderson had a career-long 44-yard rush to set up Allen's touchdown reception in the fourth quarter. He finished with 78 yards on eight carries.
Avery Sebastian notched a career-high 15 tackles, the most since D.J. Holt (at Nevada), Chris Conte (at USC) and Mike Mohamed (vs. Oregon) tallied 16 each in 2010. The total included his first career tackle for loss.
Todd Barr and Brennan Scarlett notched their third and second career sacks, respectively. Michael Lowe chipped in a personal-best nine tackles and Jalen Jefferson tied his career high in tackles with nine, as well.
Nick Forbes blocked a field goal attempt in the fourth quarter, Cal's first blocked field goal this season. The last time Cal blocked a field goal was by Rulon Davis against Washington State on Sept. 6, 2008.
Going back to last week at USC, Vincenzo D'Amato has made his last four consecutive field goals.
Today's attendance was 51,634.
Former Cal football player Thelton Henderson was the 2012 recipient of the Glenn T. Seaborg Award. Henderson joined the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, where he prosecuted voting rights cases in the Deep South. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter appointed him to the U.S. District Court of Northern California.
There was a moment of silence for Cal alum Chris Stevens, who was one of three Americans who died during an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 12. He had recently been appointed U.S. Ambassador to Libya in May this year.
