Cal Head Coach Jeff Tedford
On California's hard hits:
"Well the hit in the end zone was a football play. I felt terrible about the punt return. The true freshman covering the kick Isi Sofele, as a true freshman he hasn't been in that situation very much. He got down field and he got caught in the situation. It was not intentional by any means. I apologized to Coach Brewster about it because it is not what we are about. It was not intentional. We would never coach something like that. Isi felt bad about it as well."
"They're a good football team. I think they're very solid on defense. Their secondary is very solid and they're very physical inside. Their linebackers are good players. Number 21 [Simoni Lawrence], the outside linebacker, is a really good player I thought. They do a nice job with their blitz schemes and a nice job of disguising things. I have a lot of respect for that team. That team's going to win."
On California Quarterback Kevin Riley
"He played very well. I thought in certain situations down the stretch to hit the big third and long, we really needed that. It was the play of the game right there. He was smart with the football. No interceptions. I thought he ran the huddle very well. Solid. Not forcing the football and making good decisions. He gave us a chance and I thought he was pretty excellent throwing the football. His long ball in the first quarter was beautiful. He's making great decisions. He's doing a great job of reading and I feel good about what he's doing."
On Jahvid Best:
"People have to take notice of Jahvid and try and stop the running game. He's got a tailor made running game. Anytime you can run the football effectively and have the receivers catching their passes, you have the ability to be pretty versatile on offense."
Cal QB Kevin Riley
On the success of Cal's passing game:
"It feels really good. I mean that's something that last year we struggled with, so it just shows you how much more improved our offense is."
On Minnesota winning the third quarter:
"I think we got good third down situations. We just didn't convert. I know the one time the hole was there and Shane (Vereen) just kind of slipped. I was half a yard short, because I'm not athletic enough to get a first down. You know it's just a couple of things, and they got a couple breaks on that punt, and they got better field position with that. It's alright because we started strong and won the fourth quarter, and we got the win, and that's all that matters.
Cal TB Jahvid Best
On whether he thought today would be a big game for him:
"Well, I hope that every game is a big game for me, but we had some great blocking up front, and the holes were there, so I was just hitting them."
On pulling out the win in a close game:
"I just think that's a good test for us. Next week we're going into Oregon, and that's going to be another hostile environment. So, I'm kind of glad that they came back and kind of tested us, so now we have that under our belts, so when another team does that to us we know how to handle it."
Cal OLB, Mike Mohamed
On his first interception:
It was definitely a team effort. I was in the right place at the right time. Our D-line forced him (Weber) to make a bad throw and the ball ended up coming right to me. That was a big play after our offense had just scored. It gave us a chance to seal the deal.
We knew coming here to expect a dogfight. I would say that they were a lot tougher than we expected, though. Going up 14 points in the first quarter was definitely big, but they fought back hard. It was a struggle all day, but I think that we could have won by more. They ended up producing some big plays and the crowd helped them back in the game. That made it tough.
Cal WR, Jeremy Ross
On his play in the second half:
It means a lot to me to come through for my team. I have been dropping some balls in the past and it was great to catch a couple balls when it counts. I felt like I got stronger as the game went on and made the best of the opportunity I was given. Every chance that you get, you have to go hard and make plays.
