A relentless competitor who figures to emerge as one of the nation's premier interior linemen after pulling down first team Pac-10 honors as a junior last year...has been selected as a third team pre-season All-America pick by Athlon publications...enters his third year as a starter, rating as one of the most experienced linemen in the Pac-10...now checks in at almost 280 pounds, nearly 40 pounds heavier than he was as a freshman...has great quickness off the ball, which combined with his intensity, makes him nearly impossible to block...coaches also note his low center of gravity and his ability to read plays in the middle of the pit...has accounted for 27 tackles behind the line of scrimmage, including 12 sacks in his career, both remarkable numbers for an interior lineman who is often double-teamed...had minor arthroscopic surgery on both his knee and shoulder in consecutive weeks in December, but is back to full strength...
1999...had a sensational campaign in 1999 as one of just five juniors to earn first team all-conference honors...played a critical role on a Cal rushing defense that led the league in allowing just 2.9 yards per rush...was tops among all interior linemen in the Pac-10 with 16 tackles behind the line of scrimmage (seventh among all defensive players) and with eight sacks (seventh overall)...finished the year with 42 tackles, including 32 unassisted stops...also tied for the team lead with a pair of fumble recoveries...had several dominant games, but the Arizona State and Washington State games particularly stood out...had six tackles (four unassisted) and a pair of stops behind the line of scrimmage against Arizona State...had five unassisted tackles at WSU and tried to take over the game single-handedly early in the third quarter as he broke through for a tackle five yards behind the line on the first play of the third quarter and, two plays later, sacked Cougar QB Steve Birnbaum to cause a fumble which he picked up and returned 25 yards for a TD to cut the lead to 17-7...also had a pair of tackles behind the line at BYU and vs. USC...named Cal's Most Inspirational Player in a vote by his teammates last fall...
1998...ended the season with 10 tackles behind the line of scrimmage (minus 42 yards), an inordinately high number for an interior linemen who was often double-teamed...had three sacks on the season, including a 4-yard sack on the final Oregon State series to help thwart a last-ditch comeback attempt...had a sensational game at Arizona State, as he was credited with five tackles behind the line of scrimmage (minus 24 yards), including a pair of sacks (minus 19 yards), and caused one fumble...recovered one fumble on the season early in the UCLA game when he snatched up a ball at the Bruin 2-yard-line to set up a Cal touchdown...
1997...had a solid freshman campaign, appearing in six games...played both noseguard and defensive tackle during the season...saw his first collegiate action at Houston in the Bears opener and was credited with an assisted tackle...ended the season with three tackles, including one that went for a six-yard loss vs. Oregon State.
High School/Personal: Earned first team all-state honors (medium-sized schools) as a defensive lineman at Quartz Hill HS...played center, tight end and fullback on offense, but really shined on defense where he had seven sacks among his 80 tackles as a senior...also had 537 rushing yards and five TDs at fullback in 1996...chose Cal over Washington and UCLA...was an excellent prep wrestler who ranked among the Top 5 in the state in the 215-pound weight class...lists fishing as a hobby...mother is Rhonda Green of Lancaster...born Oct. ..18, 1979.
